Shakar Bakery – From Enginieering To Baking This week we are excited to feature Shakar Bakery on our blog! We recently met Shantal, owner of Shakar Bakery and we fell in love with her work! Shakar Bakery specializes in designer cakes that are unique and customized to your specifications and you can find out all about her work on the Shakar Bakery listing on Harsanik.com. We were very intrigued when we found out that Shantal has a Master’s degree in engineering and relatively recently switched her career from engineering to baking! So we spent some time getting to know Shantal and we wanted to share her interesting background with all of you, along with her beautiful work! “My love affair with cake design and decorating was an accidental one. It all started after I graduated in 2009 with my Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering and had difficulty finding a satisfying and fulfilling opportunity. While soul-searching for my true passion I started to design cakes for friend’s birthdays, and had an “ah ha!” moment – I really enjoyed this, and was good at it too! I decided to take my future into my own hands, and created my own business! It was very important to find a unique name that reflected the business, was easy to remember, and was fun! After much thought I settled on Shakar Bakery and registered the business in December 2009. “Shakar” means sugar or candy in Armenian. I’m a self-taught baker, spending countless hours using Google and YouTube as my educational and reference tools. It was a little frustrating at first, and I met many roadblocks along the way, but through trial and error, numerous hours of practice, and extreme frustration I pursued my passion and now I have incredible customers which make Shakar Bakery what it is today! I really enjoy working with my customers and getting creative with their cake designs. It’s challenging and very rewarding. Nothing makes me happier than reading an e-mail or receiving a picture of my creations from customers. Currently I work full time as an Environmental Engineer by day, and focus on all of the wonderful cake designs in the evenings. Some of my hobbies include writing monthly articles for the Armenian Weekly, traveling the world, following astronomy, hiking, and playing the piano. Fun facts about me: I was raised in a Uruguayan-Armenian household and speak English, Spanish and Armenian fluently.” We love meeting Armenian entrepreneur who have started their own business, and we are thrilled that Shantal has pursued her passion and strength and created Shakar Bakery! Shantal – Congrats on the interesting journey from engineering to baking and on behalf of Harsanik.com, we wish you lots of success!See more here:...

Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend

Posted by on Oct 16, 2012 in Designer Cakes | 0 comments

Do you sometimes wonder how a business was discovered? What was it that set it off in a strong direction? There’s always a special moment during the growth of a small business that helps set it apart from all the others. Mine was this cake, and its story has been long delayed. This blog gets personal…It’s a rare insight that I choose to share with you. Back in March, while I was working on a very complex cake, I received a phone call from a good friend of mine, Manya, asking if I could put together a two tier cake for a birthday party the upcoming weekend. I rarely ever accept cake orders with a week’s notice, but I’m known to make a few exceptions! My friend Manya is a very organized and meticulous person, so I wasn’t surprised when she started describing her vision for the cake order in very precise details. I definitely cracked a huge smile when she said ” are you writing all this down? I’m giving you a lot of details.” Note: I was definitely writing it all down 🙂 Anyway, it turns out the cake was for a very special friend of hers, and Manya emphasized the cake had to have a lot of BLING. She wanted something that would WOW everyone who looked at the cake, and she wanted the cake to be a very bright pink. After e-mailing me a picture of a sugar flower she loved, we reviewed the details one last time, and I got to work! In essence, the cake was really simple, and sculpting flowers was (and still is) one of my favorite pass times, so after we hung up the phone I didn’t really sweat it. I didn’t start sweating until I started to have one of those weeks where everything was going the wrong way. I had one customer lash out at me that week, and complaints are really rare in my business so her approach really affected me. During my moment of weakness (all of us bakers have the moment where we wonder “am I really good at this?” when you’re having a bad week), Manya called to follow up on the cake. I don’t know what vibe I gave off but she sensed something was going on and she decided to get very militant. To this day, I appreciate that phone call  🙂 It went something like this: “Shantal, I don’t know what’s going on, but you’re making this cake. Your work is amazing, and I know you will do an incredible job. Now go sculpt!” And sculpt I did! We chose my signature Chocolate Dulce de Leche flavor for the cake, since it’s always such a huge hit with the crowd! The top tier of the cake was quilted and I added diamonds for the bling effect. I tried making edible sugar kind, but it just didn’t sparkle enough for a great effect! When I was done with the cake details, I knew the birthday girl was going to fall in love with the cake. The best part of the story is that the birthday girl’s boyfriend proposed to her that very same night! What a lucky girl, a diamond themed cake and a diamond ring all in one night! Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Ok, there’s a second “best part of the story.” This cake turned out to be VERY popular! It was re-pinned over 560 times in Pinterest and I get numerous phone calls from customers telling me they love my “pink and diamond cake!” The moral of the story: we all have our moment of weakness, and that’s ok, as long as you make it through to the end. You never know what surprises await...
